Finishing the Wood Floors

April 15, 2015 By: Heather Brisman

Ok, so I’m not re-finishing the floors, I’m just cleaning them up and making them presentable.

We recently found out that not only does our dining room need foundation work, the whole stinking house does! To the tune of 55 piers. Yes, fifty-five! So after all that hard work getting the paint off the living room floor, it looks like we’re only going to be able to enjoy our “new” wood floors for a couple of months. Then they will be cutting 4 large holes in the living room floor (and two in our brick floors — which just kills me), and 5 more in the dining room. Good night, Irene.

Remember what it looked like when we pulled up the carpet? Bleh. You can read about how I got all that paint off here.

Here’s what it looks like now.

All that to say, I’m not going to invest a bunch of time and money into something that is getting ready to be choppedĀ open. Here’s how the floor looked after I finished scraping all the paint off of it. Not too bad for something I though was about a total loss and would have to paint (or sand.)

Not too bad, just very flat now that the top finish has been removed. I did a little searching online and found that the Weiman’s Hardwood floor polish and restorer got pretty good reviews. I put down about 3 coats of the polish, following the directions on the bottle (I believe I used 2 bottles for the room.) It’s not a shiny finish, but it definitely adds a depth and richness it was missing. A complete win in my book.

Here’s what it looks like now with the polish. This angle is kind of wonky and shows a bunch of white in the picture that doesn’t show up in real life (funny how cameras reveal things that you can’t see in person.)

Here’s a better picture of what we see in person.

All in all, I’m thrilled with how this turned out!

Are you getting tired of reading about all the foundation work we’ve had done? Because I’m tired of writing about it. And even more tired of enduring it. Reno-weary. That’s us. It’s a real thing. This happened today. Fourteen new piers. If you’re counting, that brings our grand total to 78 piers we’ve installed in […]
